Mathew David Hillyard Scholarship

Ashley Williams

Ashley is a junior and will begin the special education major this fall in the area of mild/moderate disabilities. She is a transfer student from Salt Lake Community College and received her Associates of Science in Para Education.  Over the last two years, Ashley has volunteered 50+ hours in special education and in regular education classrooms. She also has two brothers with disabilities in which her family has faced many challenges.  Ashley hopes to be an educator that makes a difference in the lives of children.

Joseph Steven Meyrick Memorial Scholarship

Jessica McKenna

Jessica is a junior and will begin the special education major this fall in the area of early childhood disabilities.  Throughout her life, she has had many opportunities to volunteer with special need agencies such as the Tallahassee Foster Parent Association where she worked as a camp counselor, volunteered at Big Brothers Big Sisters, and taught adaptive dance classes for children with special needs.  She also has a brother with severe disabilities and recognizes the importance of early intervention, support, and assistance.

Kimberly Westenskow

Kimberly is a transfer student from Salt Lake Community College and is presently in the Distance Mild/Moderate program.  She has three children; one which is severely and profoundly disabled.  She has been involved with many charity drives, tutoring ESL students, and volunteering with Special Olympics.  She is enjoying her classes and appreciative of being a scholarship recipient.

Donald F. and Anne C. Kline Scholarship

Tashina Meaker

Tashina is a senior at Utah State University and is presently in the special education program with an emphasis in severe disabilities.  Her inspiration to become a special education teacher came from her brother who has Downs Syndrome.  Due to her personal experiences, Tashina has a sensitive place in her heart and a high level of compassion for those with disabilities and is looking forward to student teaching Fall 2007.

Leon G. and Faye Sonne Stucki Scholarship

Staci Cleverly Cox

Staci is presently in the special education program at Utah State University with an emphasis in early childhood disabilities.  She has been involved with Special Olympics, USU's Operation Smile, and several other service projects.  She'll be student teaching Fall 2007 and is looking forward to teaching as an early interventionist.

Marissa Cook

Marissa is a dual major in elementary and special education with an emphasis in mild/moderate disabilities.  She is a senior and will be student teaching Fall 2007.  Marissa has a special interest in youth and enjoys seeing young people learn.  She has a sister with a learning disability and has had many opportunities to tutor and assist her with homework.  Marissa's main goal in education is to help children succeed.

Karilyn Flake

Karilyn is a dual major in elementary and special education with an emphasis in severe disabilities.  her pride runs deep in regards to USU.  She is a member of the "A" Team, and is the Director for ASUSU Traditions.  She loves being in the classroom and inteacting with students putting to use the knowledge she has learned from her professors.  She is appreciative of Utah State and all who make USU what it is.

McKenzie Lerdahl

McKenzie is a dual major in elementary and special education with an emphasis in mild/moderate disabilities. She will begin the program this fall.  McKenzie is excited to get into the classroom and begin teaching children.  She has also been active with service agencies and community organizations.  She is hopeful that administration will look toward her dual degree as an opportunity to allow more inclusion in the classroom.

Rachel Washburn

Rachel is a junior and will begin the special education major this fall in the area of severe disabilities.  Growing up, she had severalfriends with special needs and this inspired her to become a peer tutor in high school.  At USU, she has been involved with Special Olympics, the Special Needs Institute, and also has had the opportunity to work at ASSERT.  Working at ASSERT was a dream come true as she received a greater understanding and the on-hands experience of Applied Behavior Analysis as well as the impact it has when used as an early intervention.
