Prospective Students

Qualify for admission to Teacher Education

(to be completed during the Freshman Year)

  1. Communications Literacy: Must have 3 credits of ENGL 1010 with a minimum grade of C+.
  2. Qualitative Literacy: STAT 1040 or the equivalent: Must have 3 credits of math with a minimum grade of C. Start on this requirement your first semester.
  3. Breadth - American Institutions: Must have 3 credits of American Institutions with a minimum grade of C. Recommended course: USU 1300.
  4. Breadth - Physical Science: PHYS 1200 required with a minimum grade of C.
  5. Breadth - Life Science: - Must have 3 credits of life science with a minimum grade of C. Recommended course: USU 1350
  6. Human Development: FHD 1500 or PSY 1100: Must have 3 credits of a Child or Human Development course.
  7. Pass the Computer Literacy and Information Literacy Test.
  8. Pass the Writing Diagnostic Exam: This exam is given at the YETC the first five weeks of every semester during YETC hours. No charge.
  9. Speech and Hearing Test: Sign up for an appointment on the bulletin board at the USU Speech and Audiology Center in the Communicative Disorders Building, Room 101. Cost $10.00.
  10. Pass the SPED Math Test: A sixth grade math test offered in the YETC during the first five weeks of every semester.
  11. Minimum GPA of 2.75.

Apply for Admission to Special Education Major

  1. Applications are due October 1 of the Sophomore Year at http://sper.usu.edu/undergrad 

  2. Pass the background check.
  3. SPED has a competitive admissions policy. The minimum GPA for application is 2.75. The admission criteria:
    • Completion of the Teacher Education Requirements before application to the program
    • GPA
    • Prior experience in helping people with disabilities
