Mild/Moderate Special Education Distance Education Program

Program Scope & Sequence

The scope & sequence of courses for the Mild/Moderate Special Education Distance Education Program can be found at the link below (this includes only the specialization courses for this program).

Program Scope & Sequence

Registration

Students must be authorized to register for all program courses. Because Utah State University is currently transitioning to the use of the Banner registration system, registration is being facilitated by the program advisor. We anticipate that this inconvenience will be remedied soon.

Express-A-Book

The Utah State University Bookstore has a program called Express-A-Book which is available to all students. By using Express-A-Book, students can have their textbooks shipped directly to their door. To order course materials, call 1-800-662-3950 (toll free) or 435-797-0813 on Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students should receive their book orders within five working days, depending on stock availability and delivery schedules.

Accessing WebCT Courses

WebCT is an online course delivery software/platform that will enable students to access helpful information for their courses. Using WebCT, a student will be able to access course materials, course bulletin boards, course chat rooms, and grades. To access WebCT, use the following steps.

  1.  Go to http://sped.usu.edu/mild.
  2.  Select a course from the pull-down menu in the top right-hand corner of the screen.
  3.  Enter your username and password (if unknown follow the prompts on the screen).
  4.  Click "Log in."

Background Check

As a result of a legislative mandate, all students who have practica must complete a background check. If students have previously completed background checks for other degrees or for employment, they must still complete a new background check. This must be done by April 15 prior to the beginning of the program. Applications may be obtained by contacting Teri Gass at (435) 797-1443. There is a fee for the Background Check. There are no exceptions to this policy. You will not be allowed to start practica if the background check is not complete.

Student Teaching Application

Student teaching applications are due the semester prior to student teaching. The deadline for Fall Semester is February 1. The deadline for Spring Semester is October 1. Applications may be obtained by contacting Darcie Petersen, at (435) 797-3252 or darciep@cc.usu.edu. The fee for student teaching will be included in your semester fees (paid with tuition) the semester you student teach. The current fee for student teaching is $175 but may change.

PRAXIS Exam

Students should plan to take the State of Utah Praxis exam before doing student teaching. This exam is currently undergoing changes in order to meet the requirements for the No Child Left Behind Act. Students will be given more information regarding this exam as changes are finalized by the state.

Professional Organizations

Every student is required to join a professional special education organization during their special education program. Information regarding various organizations will be provided to each student along with applications for these organizations. There is a fee associated with each professional organization.

Applying for Graduation

Students planning to graduate spring semester must complete their graduation application by October 15 the semester prior to graduation. Those planning to graduate summer or fall semester must apply by February 15 during the year they plan to graduate. Students should apply for graduation two semesters before graduation to ensure meeting the deadline. This allows time to deal with unforeseen complications. A packet may be obtained by submitting an application for a packet to the Graduation Office. Applications are available at extension sites or can be obtained online at: http://www.usu.edu/registrar/graduation/apply-online-form.cfm. A $10 fee must accompany the application.

Graduation Application Steps:
 1.  Fill out the graduation application (by paper or online).
 2.  Wait for 10 business days for application processing. Off-campus students must indicate where they would like the packet sent.
 3.  Review the graduation application and transcript, sign it, and mail to your academic advisor along with the $10 application fee. Do not forget to sign your graduation application.
 4.  The academic advisor will complete and sign the packet. It will then be taken to the College Dean for the required signature and submitted to the Cashiers Office.

Late applications will be accepted by the University with the following penalties: a $100 application fee; no guarantee that the student's name will appear in the commencement program; although the student will be allowed to participate in commencement, there will be no guarantee that the student will receive a diploma at commencement.
