Program Scope and Sequence

Mild/Moderate Special Education Distance Education Program

This special education program is designed to provide students with firsthand experiences teaching pupils with disabilities through practica. Students will begin their program with courses that provide a background in working with students with disabilities. Students will then participate in a direct instruction reading practicum, which is scripted to help students learn the basics of teaching students with disabilities. This practicum will be followed by a math practicum which is designed for students to learn to teach math and write their own lesson plans. These two practica experiences, combined with the knowledge gained from the additional coursework, will give students the knowledge they need to teach in thier own classroom setting. Student teaching will be the final experience where students will use all of this knowledge in teaching students with disabilities.

Courses are taught one evening during the week during fall and spring semesters and multiple evenings during the summer semester. Practicum courses are scheduled for two semesters. Students are required to teach for one hour each day in a local school these semesters. Student teaching is a full-day experience for an entire semester. Students who have previous teaching degrees will student teach a half-day for an entire semester. Course listings are subject to change.
