Admission

Admission of students into the Mild/Moderate Special Education Distance Education Program occurs on October 1 of even numbered years. Applications for the 2009-2011 cohort are due by October 1 2008.

The program accepts 40 new students into each cohort, making admission a very competitive process. Applicants must be admitted to Utah State University prior to applying to the program. Program applicants are rated on the following factors:

  • Overall GPA;
  • completion of 44 semester credit hours including completion of the required courses listed in the Admission Checklist;
  • career goals and prior experiences.

Students who are interested in applying to the program should be in contact with the Program Advisor throughout their pre-program coursework.

Applicants who do not meet the minimum admission requirements will not be considered. The following documents contain information regarding admission, the requirements for admission, and a brief overview for students who are working to meet these minimum requirements.

  • Writing Exam: Applicants for the Mild/Moderate Special Education Distance Education Program must successfully complete the College of Education and Human Services writing exam before being considered for admission.   • Special Education Department Math Exam: Special education applicants must successfully complete the Special Education Department Math Exam before they will be considered for admission. This exam is available during the first 5 weeks of the semester at your Region Campus or Center. Information regarding this exam as well as a practice test can be found at the link below.   • Computer and Information Literacy (CIL) Exam: The Computer and Information Literacy (CIL) Exam is a Utah State University general education (University Studies) requirement. This exam must be successfully completed before students will be considered for admission to this program. Information regarding this exam can be found at the link below. USU CIL Exam information.
  • Background Check: As a result of a legislative mandate, all students must complete a background check. Students who have previously completed background checks for other degrees or for employment must complete a new background check. The deadline for background checks is April 15.
